Welcome to the DuMP3 FAQ

This is the section that discusses the frequently asked questions about DuMP3.

What is DuMP3?

DuMP3 (derived from Duplicate MP3) is a java program to find duplicate and similar files by comparing calculated fingerprints.

General usage

Using DuMP3

How do I compare text files with extensions other than txt, ini or java

Currently DuMP3 only compares .txt, .java and .ini files with it's text engine. If you require DuMP3 to compare text files with other extensions you can edit the config.xml file. In the section <category name="text"> you can add any extension to the <property name="extensions" value="txt,ini"/> by adding a comma and the file extension. For example, say you want to also compare .xyz files using the text compare algorithm, you would change the <property name="extensions" value="txt,ini"/> to look like this: <property name="extensions" value="txt,ini,xyz"/>.

DuMP3 runs very slowly

There could be several causes:

  1. Java could be swapping memory to disc. Solution: You can increase the -Xmx setting in the findupsgui.bat or findupsgui.sh file.
  2. MP3 fingerprint generation should take no more than two minutes per file. Solution: I will make the FFT faster in future.
  3. Image scaling can take a long time if the image is large. Solution: I could use a newer version of the JAI image library.

Errors

Common errors:

Why am I getting [java.sql.SQLException: Table 'dump3.fileinfotype' doesn't exist] errors?

Since version 0.2.7 DuMP3 will save the file info (width, height, etc.) in the database. However the tables for this info did not exist prior to 0.2.7. You need to create them.
1. Open a MySQL command line window, log on and type use dump3 and enter.
2. Open create.mysql.sql and copy the lines:

create table fileinfotype (
  fileinfotypeid integer not null primary key auto_increment,
  fileinfotype varchar(500) not null unique
);
create table fileinfo (
  fileinfotypeid integer references fileinfotype.fileinfotypeid on delete cascade,
  filenameid integer references filename.filenameid on delete cascade,
  fileinfo varchar(500) not null,
  constraint unique index idx_unq_fileinfo (filenameid, fileinfotypeid)
);

and paste them into your MySQL command line client window. 3. Type exit to close the MySQL command line client window.
4. Run DuMP3 again.

Why am I getting [java.sql.SQLException: Table 'dump3.notdup' doesn't exist] errors?

Since version 0.2.10 DuMP3 will save files marked as "not duplicate" in the database. However the table does not exist prior to 0.2.10. You need to create it.
1. Open a MySQL command line window, log on and type use dump3 and enter.
2. Open create.mysql.sql and copy the lines:

create table notdup (
  filenameid1 integer references filename.filenameid on delete cascade,
  filenameid2 integer references filename.filenameid on delete cascade,
  constraint unique index idx_unq_notdup (filenameid1, filenameid2)
);

and paste them into your MySQL command line client window.
3. Type exit to close the MySQL command line client window.
4. Run DuMP3 again.

Why am I getting [javax.sound.sampled.LineUnavailableException: line with format ... not supported] errors?

The Java sound API can not decode certain audio streams if the machine does not have a sound card. Run DuMP3 on a machine that has a sound card. Binary comparison will still work and exact duplicates will still be found.

Why am I getting [java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space] errors?

By default DuMP3 is limited to use a maximum 128MB RAM. If you have more RAM installed in your machine, you can edit finddupsgui.bat / finddups.bat or ./finddupsgui.sh / ./finddups.sh on Linux. Change the value -Xmx128m to a higher value. See the Java application launcher (Windows) or the Java application launcher (Linux/Solaris) for details.
